Credo Theatre is an independent theatre founded in 1992 in Sofia by the actors Nina Dimitrova and Vassil Vassilev-Zuek.
THE OVERCOAT AFTER N. V. GOGOL, the theatre’s first production, brought the company national and international acclaim, with over 600 performances presented in 9 different languages at over 200 international theatre festivals all over the world. ‘The Overcoat’ was listed at the Edinburgh Festival, UK (1996,1997) ‘Top 20’ Best Art Events of the festival by ‘The List’ magazine. ‘The Overcoat’ was listed ‘Top 5’ Best Performances of ‘Guardian’ newspaper (2000), when the production was presented at Barbican Centre, London. With its ‘Overcoat’ Credo Theatre was the first international guest of the Golden Mask Festival in Moscow, Russia (1997) and the first Bulgarian theatrе in the program of many international festivals all over the world. ‘The Overcoat’ is recipient of 14 international awards for Best Performance. The Russian critics wrote, „the great success of ‘The Overcoat’ in Gogol`s country is possibly the highest award for the production’ and announced it as ‘an outstanding event in European theatre of the second half of the XX century!’
Credo Theatre production DADDY`S ALWAYS RIGHT AFTER H. C. ANDERSEN was created by invitation of and supported by the Hans Christian Andersen Foundation (Denmark) to present Bulgaria at the worldwide celebration of the 200th anniversary from Andersen’s birth in Denmark (2005). The production has over 200 performances presented in 4 different languages at over 50 international theatre festivals in Europe, Asia, Nord and South America. ‘Daddy`s always right’ is recipient of 8 international awards for Best performance.
The production „DIARY OF A MADMAN AFTER N. V. GOGOL (2015) has nominations for the two of the most prestigious Bulgarian Theatre Awards: National Award ‘Ikarus’ of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and the National Award ‘Askeer’ and it is recipient of Best Аctor Award at the International Theatre Festival in Gabrovo (Bulgaria).
The production THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR AFTER N.V. GOGOL is recipient of 10 National Theatre Awards: 4 National Awards ‘Ikarus’ of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, Best Directing Award, Best Stage Design Award and two awards for Best Actor at the International Theatre Festival in Vratza (Bulgaria), Best Рerformance Award and Best Аctor Award of the National Academy of Theatre and Film Art and a nomination for the National Theatre Award ‘Ikarus’ for Best Stage Design.
In 2008 The Union of Bulgarian Artists awarded Credo Theatre with ‘Ikarus’ for its contribution to popularizing Bulgarian theatre and culture all over the world.
In 2009 Credo Theatre was nominated for the European Theatre Award ‘New Theatre Reality’ for its innovation in the theatre.
